Learning English is a difficult task in the best of circumstances and in today’s busy world it can be a overwhelming undertaking without a reliable resource that can afford the ESL student to opportunity to practice writing, reading and listening the language. Is phonetics essential in learning to speak English?

Yes and grammar is too. Phonetics ARE essential in the formation and pronunciation or words and phrases; however, I don’t agree that the phonetic symbols, found in dictionary-definitions, are very helpful in everyday use.

English is an extremely difficult language to master there are several linguistic pitfalls that are inherent in the English language structure. Because the English language is composed of words from several different linguistic sources, there are numerous homonyms (words that are spelled the same but have different meanings), homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently) and other words that have quirky or difficult spellings and pronunciations.
