English Movies To Improve Your English? Not Recommended For Everybody

Filed under: Learning English; Author: admin; Posted: January 21, 2009 at 3:28 pm;

Constantly, students of English as a second language are told to use all feasible means to practice and improve their language skills. That includes surfing the Internet, listening to music, reading newspapers and watching movies.

Obviously, most English students agree watching English movies is their favourite practicing tool, the most entertaining and an almost inexhaustible resource. Clearly there are enormous benefits from watching English movies on a daily basis. It improves listening skills, and it also widens the vocabulary as well as teaches “daily” spoken language instead of a more structured “classroom” English.

But, despite those benefits, watching English spoken movies is not recommended for everybody. On the contrary, it is only advisable for students that already have a medium to advanced knowledge of the English basis. For beginners it can be not only discouraging but also harmful.

Most dialogues use non-standard diction, which is frustrating for beginner students that will not be able to understand what is being said. Students are learning correct pronunciation and phonetics and when they hear completely different speech and pronunciation, it will be confusing. Students should first acquire the correct pronunciation before moving on to “street” language.

In most cases, the amount of slang or popular phrases might be overwhelming. That sort of content is only recommended for advanced students who are ready to learn them since they are already acknowledgeable with the language.

Another thing to consider is the origin of the movies to be seen since the pronunciation is too different depending the country of origin. For someone in the process of learning UK English and acquiring the listening skills, listening for example Australian English may be simply impossible to understand. Advanced students though, will be widening their skills, as on the long term they will be able to understand spoken English regardless the country of origin.
