Did you know that right now, approximately 1 billion people are trying to learn to speak and write English? Maybe that doesn’t impress you. Maybe you still don’t think learning another language is something that interests you. Your family and most of your friends have survived without learning English. Why should you bother? In truth, there are many good reasons that you, as a part of this generation, must learn English. Let’s talk about them.

1) You need to learn it because so many people either already speak / write English or are learning to do so. In fact, add the 1 billion who are learning it to the 1.5 billion who already know it, and you have about a quarter of the world’s population who will soon probably know English. So if you plan to do business with these people, speaking and writing English will help you to do so.

2) Almost every major world organization and function is administered in English. This includes the Olympics, the United Nations, and many others. International trade is in language, and many websites use English as an intermediary language, capable of communicating to the most people across the globe. There is a huge amount of information available online, and such the majority of sites are in English, this information will only be available to you if you know English.

3) Learning English will help you better keep up with the world news. Most of the best known international news stations broadcast in English. This includes CNN, BBC, NBC International, and others. And all of these cover news, not only from English speaking countries, but news from all over the world. Likewise, you can find international newspapers in the English language all over the world.

4) Maybe most importantly, learning English will probably help you get better jobs in the future. English is known as the world’s international language of business. But even with local jobs, companies know that English-speaking people spend a lot of money, and they love hiring employees who can speak the language. Plus, if you decide to own your own business, it’s likely that many potential clients will speak only English.

These four reasons should make it obvious: You’ll be a better, more successful person if you do your best to master reading, writing and speaking English.

One of the best ways to improve your English skills is by working with a private tutor. Although learning in a class with many students also has its advantages, nothing beats having a person sitting beside you, listening to you speak the language and telling you when you get it wrong–and right.

If you’ve decided you want to get an English teacher, here are some things you should remember.

1) First, decide if you want a male or female tutor. This might sound funny, but it’s important. For instance, some men could not work well if another man is teaching them. On the other hand, some men might be so enamored of an attractive female tutor that he needs to work with a male. You must know what kind of learner you are, and which tutor will benefit you more as a student, not the one who excites you emotionally.

2) Try to find a tutor with previous experience or qualifications. This could mean the person has previously taught in a school. But more important is whether the person has experience as a tutor. School teaching and private teaching are two different things.

3) Don’t put too much emphasis on if the person knows your language. Believe it or not, a person who does not know a word of your native language can still teach you English! You should be more concerned about if the person knows English well and whether he or she is a good private teacher.

4) It stands to reason that you should select a teacher who lives fairly near to you. Traffic delays will frustrate you if you (or he / she) has a long distance to travel. And being close to your tutor makes it less likely that you’ll have to cancel because of bad weather.

5) And of course, price is also a consideration. Sometimes you can find a tutor for free. The better ones, though, might charge you an hourly fee. It’s up to you to decide if the paid tutor’s quality is something you can afford.

When learning a second language, it always seems like a non-stop battle between new material, and what you have always been doing with speech and grammar. Much of the material that is presented to you seems unorganized, confusing, and many times, there is almost too much of it to handle. There are two major things you need to have to learn English as a second language; patients, and keeping an open mind. These two key items will help keep you relaxed and realize that you won’t be able to understand everything at once.

It takes practice, patients, almost stubbornness to pick up English. If you remain clam, realize that everything won’t make sense at first, and keep an open mind to the language, give it time it will make sense. With patients, if you keep plugging away at what you don’t understand very well, ask questions, and can connect pieces of a grammar puzzle, then English will eventually make sense. Taking breaks, and having a slow steady approach to grammar, and taking information one bit at a time can have a much greater effectiveness than trying to plow through everything, in which you will most likely just be banging your head against a wall shortly after.

Patience isn’t the only element you will need to master your new English material. Keeping an open mind is just as important. Without patience,, an open mind is just a room with two open doors, information goes in, and right back out again. If you possess the patience to keep plugging away at an issue that bothers you, then keeping an open mind will help you to understand that English is different from all the other languages. Seeing grammar differences can help someone understand similarities between the languages, and makes those similarities much easier to understand.

It really is hard to talk about one without the other. Patience and an open mind work hand in hand together to help you understand English. The two complement each other very well, and both are requirement in order to understand and comprehend what one is saying in the English language.

English is among the most difficult languages to pick up, especially for living in America. There are so many slang terms and secondary languages built into English, it could almost be considered a whole other language by itself. Nobody ever said learning English would be an easy task, but with an open mind and patience, the English language can be mastered.

My mother told me many times when I was younger, “You’ll never learn anything sitting in front of a video game all day.” Maybe that was true back then, but there is an exciting way now that you can use a video game to help you learn Spanish. It’s a program called “My English Coach.”

“My English Coach is available for both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP handheld gaming systems. But this is no lightweight game that is mostly fun and little learning. I have talked to several people who used this program as their primary tool for learning English. It is absolutely great!

Let’s talk about what you get in “My English Coach.” The program starts you off with an interactive test. You will be asked several questions, and at the end, it will place you at the level where it feels you need to start. If you have already learned much about English, you will be placed at a higher level than those who are just starting to learn.

After that, you work your way through hundreds and hundreds of lessons. Each lesson has a training part and a game part. Both help you master both English words and grammar. Only you have reached a certain level of mastery does the next lesson open up.

And that’s not all. Besides the main learning portion of “My English Coach,” there are extra features such as an English dictionary and a phrase book, telling you how to say the most common sayings in a way that English-native people will understand you.

You could literally use this and only this program and learn enough English to communicate with English speakers. However, you will do even better if you combine the program with other learning resources. For instance, there are now free sites on the Internet that offer worksheets, video and audio, all of which help you master the English language.

The one problem you might have is finding “My English Coach;” it’s not available everywhere. One of the best options is to search it on the website of either Wal-Mart or GameStop, both of which usually have it in stock.

How you relate to other people is an essential ingredient in determining whether you will be successful or not in business. If you have a bad attitude and are rude or short with co-workers, clients or associates it is likely that you will not do well in your business relationships.

Treating people well usually means that they will return the favor and treat you with the respect you deserve. Whether you manage employees or work alone – the way you interact with people will translate into whether you get the best out of your employees or manage to score that extra sale. It is amazing what a difference a tone of voice or the right phrase that is not condescending can do to morale and to setting the scene for a successful business.

A successful salesman is usually one who is very outgoing and gregarious and while it is not necessary to be laughing and joking all the time, it is smart though to say Good Morning or Good Night as you are coming or going and to really mean it and listen to the answer when you ask someone: How are you? That phrase is an automatic one that is repeated after you say hello but most people don’t wait for or even care what the reply is!

It is not necessary to care what is said – but it is important to listen to what your employees say or what your customers tell you or what a co-worker’s opinion is. You don’t have to agree with everyone either, but you can set the tone for your relationship to keep the business going by being polite and responsive when there is a problem. And you will find that your business will be much more successful by just having a good attitude!

The internet is a wealth of information with data and tools at our fingertips to help us to learn English and continue to build our vocabulary as we progress. If you don’t utilize your newfound language skills and keep adding to your vocabulary you will become more hesitant to use it.

If you have your own computer or can use one at work or school that is a start. Other resources are available as well like a library or an internet café that often has computers available for anyone to use. The key is that as you continue to learn English you have to keep adding to your knowledge base.

Online tools will assist you with explanations of grammar usage and can provide exercises that will test your knowledge and show you your errors so that you can learn easily. There are reading and writing exercises with quizzes at the end. You can build your vocabulary with games, flash cards and general tests – all of which are often free and are fun to do as well.

With interactive databases and links that will challenge your knowledge of phrases, verbs and how they are used, you will be amazed at how quickly you will absorb this information and develop a better vocabulary and usage of words. Once you have learned new words, there are learning strategies available that will push you onward to utilize this newfound information and keep using it until it becomes second nature.

Most of the online resources are free making it almost impossible to find an excuse not to try it and see how well you can do. Each time you take a quiz you will be increasing your English skills and vocabulary thereby improving your ability to communicate with anyone anywhere – about any subject!

If you are an ESL student who wants to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL it is important for you to be prepared when you take the test. Like all tests it sounds scary but if you concentrate on learning you will do fine. Here are some easy guidelines to follow every day to make it easier for you:

•	Listen - Television, movies, radio, music and online programs will help you tremendously because listening will strengthen your vocabulary and if you listen closely to the words you will understand what syllables to stress. Take note of special expressions or slang terms that are used that might be regional or might not.
•	Read - Newspapers, magazines, books, textbooks, even labels at the grocery store – al of these things will help you to learn English and are available everywhere.
•	Write – Sending emails is ideal for helping you with sentence structure although many people tend to make abbreviations so try to avoid that. In class you can take notes – and not in your native language – especially write down words or phrases that are new to you. Keeping a journal or a diary is a good way to see your progress. It will also make a nice remembrance for later years but gives you good practice now when you need it.
•	Speak – Try to speak to people as much as possible. Make excuses to start conversations by asking for directions or asking an opinion about something. The more you practice the better you will be and the easier it will get every day as well.

Here are a few more tips for taking International English Tests. On test day don’t waste time on questions that you aren’t sure of. Skip them and come back to them later but remember to pace yourself so that you don’t run out of time. Most of all – don’t panic if you have been using the tips you should have no problem passing the test.

With more and more people arriving every day in this country, the number of ESL students increases dramatically. People are coming from every country in the world hoping to see the country on vacation, finish their studies in the United States or are being employed. With so many needing help in learning English resources are available everywhere to make their lessons easier and faster.

Online resources are plentiful – with many of them free – to take courses, to research words or phrases or to take a practice test. There are chat rooms where you can converse with other students thereby giving you access to friends while learning your new language. There are games that you can play that will improve your vocabulary and grammar quizzes that you can take to learn sentence structure.

There are library reading sources as well as places where you can listen – and learn – and there are places you can practice your writing skills in preparation for an exam or to write a business letter. You can get help with your resume and tips on what to do or say in an interview. You can look up words in a dictionary and check out common idioms used and dialects from different parts of the country.

For some people the way to learn is the traditional classroom with a teacher giving you assignments one or two times per week. However, this way to learn has taken a back seat today as most people do not have enough time or the ability to attend a class or it doesn’t fit into their schedule. It is therefore imperative that they find other resources. Other ways to learn are audio tapes along with reading and listening to the radio or watching television. Television and movies give you a picture with actions to fit with the words, so the resources are available in a variety of places and types of media – all you have to do is decide which is the most appropriate for you.

Learning another language can sometimes be daunting especially if you don’t feel confident about speaking to strangers because you are afraid you will say the wrong thing and embarrass yourself – or even worse insult someone! Learning English is no exception but people of all ages have found that watching movies and videos can help.

Movies in particular are telling us a story in pictures and words – and sometimes actions speak louder than words – making it very clear what is happening even if you don’t completely understand what is being said. Obviously movies that have subtitles in your native language will make it easy for you to understand – but it also defeats the purpose of learning English.

The best thing to do is go online or rent a movie and just keep repeating scenes and watching carefully to see body movements and actions which sometimes say it all without a word being uttered. Body language speaks volumes so you can easily tell if someone is angry or is in love by the way they act and the movements they make. Listening is the key to this -listening carefully to understand the nuances and together with the actions you can make sense of what is going on.

Generally music videos can help as well because they have put together a video that puts their words into dancing or other emotions making it easier to know what they are saying in the songs. The key is to improve your comprehension by improving your listening abilities so that after awhile you will be very adept at improving your English.

The best part of watching movies or videos is you can be entertained at the same time that you are learning making each lesson easier and more fun!
