My English Coach: Review

My mother told me many times when I was younger, “You’ll never learn anything sitting in front of a video game all day.”  Maybe that was true back then, but there is an exciting way now that you can use a video game to help you learn Spanish.  It’s  a program called “My English Coach.”

“My English Coach is available for both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP handheld gaming systems.  But this is no lightweight game that is mostly fun and little learning.  I have talked to several people who used this program as their primary tool for learning English. It is absolutely great!

Let’s talk about what you get in “My English Coach.”  The program starts you off with an interactive test.  You will be asked several questions, and at the end, it will place you at the level where it feels you need to start.  If you have already learned much about English, you will be placed at a higher level than those who are just starting to learn.

After that, you work your way through hundreds and hundreds of lessons.  Each lesson has a training part and a game part.  Both help you master both English words and grammar.  Only you have reached a certain level of mastery does the next lesson open up.

And that’s not all.  Besides the main learning portion of “My English Coach,” there are extra features such as an English dictionary and a phrase book, telling you how to say the most common sayings in a way that English-native people will understand you.

You could literally use this and only this program and learn enough English to communicate with English speakers.  However, you will do even better if you combine the program with other learning resources.  For instance, there are now free sites on the Internet that offer worksheets, video and audio, all of which help you master the English language.

The one problem you might have is finding “My English Coach;” it’s not available everywhere.  One of the best options is to search it on the website of either Wal-Mart or GameStop, both of which usually have it in stock.
